This Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, we will be hosting a Free Knitalong with the purchase of a Market Bag kit. You may purchase a premade kit or build your own bag and choose your own colors. The kit includes the yarn, and pattern, but not the needles. The needles neccessary for this project are US sizes 8 & 9 16″ circulars and US size 9 DPNs. The store hours on Saturday are 9am-3pm and knitters are welcome to come and go anytime during business hours. This is not an instructional class, so please be comfortable with knitting in the round and using DPNs. There will be support for any questions regarding the pattern. If crocheters are interested, we have found a crochet pattern that is similar, but has not yet been tested. Karla is working on Saturday and is proficient in both knitting and crocheting.
Farmer’s Market days are just around the corner. This is a quick knit. Knit up a few, for big shopping days or as a gift for someone special. We hope to see you soon! Enjoy the warming weather. It’s time for knitting with cottons, hemps, linens, and other amazing non wool fibers. We have a nice selection here at Happyknits! Stop in for a visit. Sit and Stitch with us….we love seeing you and seeing what you’ve got on the needles!
Keep someone's hands warm this winter
Some of you may have received the email from Sarah about her mitten knit a long, but I wanted to add it to the website as well.
Sarah is hosting a knitalong every Thursday from 4-6pm at Happyknits. This is FREE for all, but please be fairly comfortable with double pointed needles to join along. She is available for help but will also need to be available for other customers at this time. She has designed and written a pattern which is also free and available at the store. The idea for this came from the charity knitting we decided to do this holiday season and even on after the holidays. We will be collecting donations of mittens, all sizes, and dispersing them amongst local schools, doctor’s offices, and at Spectrum Generations (a program for elderly). If you would like to participate in this, please talk to us about receiving a 10% discount on your yarn for this project. Ideally we would like to see you at the knitalong in order to receive the discount, but if the timing doesn’t work for you and you still want to knit mittens for donation, let us know. We trust your honesty and trust that we will see you again with some beautiful handmade mittens to add to our “Mitten Tree”.
Of course you are more than welcome to knit with whatever yarn you choose from your stash as well. You do not have to purchase yarn at Happyknits to participate in the knitalong. We would love to have you
I hope you, yourselves are all looking forward to the upcoming season….it is knitting/crocheting season after all
And please, know that you are welcome and encouraged to come sit by our fire at any time during store hours and relax and work on any project you have going. We love visitors!! Thank you so much for reading and following us here and on our other social media sites, and for being loyal, supportive, and straight up fantastic people. Bring on the snow, eh?
Hope you are all well and staying warm. I don’t know about you but I am enjoying doing a little knitting to unwind from the holidays and 2014. A lot of times, January is a big knitting month for me as I just try to wrap my head around what has just ended and what is about to begin. I don’t always make New Year’s resolutions but I do always think about what they would be if I did This year, I am kinda sorta promising myself that I will go outside my comfort zone and try and learn some new things. You know….get interested in things instead of staying stuck in the same old routine of life. Buy something I’ve never tried at the grocery store (and actually try it), read a book on a subject I’ve always wondered about, go see some new live music, go somewhere, meet new people, get crafty, organize something, (I already did this btw, with my junk drawer. I bought those little containers that fit in the drawer and sorted everything all out….elastics, pens, tacks, temporary tattoos) .
I think you should try something new too, with me, or Marylou, or Sarah, or Karla
Here’s what we have in mind:
Two Hour “Big Hat” w/ Marylou ~ Choose either Friday, Feb 6, 10:30am-12:30pm, OR Monday, Feb 9, 6:00-8:00pm.
Learn how to knit in the round using circular needles and complete a great, chunky hat in a 2 hour session! You should be comfortable casting on and knitting and purling to join this class. You will create a nice warm hat with a ribbed edge and an impressive pom pom! Bring your own materials or get them here You will need US sz 15 16″Circular and Double Pointed Needles (dpn), a stitch marker, and Super bulky yarn. The pattern will be provided for you. The cost of this class is $10. Please pre-pay to reserve a space
Socks w/ Sarah ~ Mondays, February 2,9, and 16, 4-6pm (3 week class)
Take the leap and learn to knit socks. You will be so glad you did! Socks are the perfect project. They are easy and fun, small and portable, and you end up with something that has the potential to make any single person happy! You will love being free from the intimidation of the heel and realize it is one of the most satisfying experiences of you’re life!
In this class, you will learn to work in the round on double pointed needles, turn a heel without fear, make a left and right leaning decrease, and close a toe using a simple and beautiful adaption of the Kitchener stitch. You should already be comfortable with making the basic knit and purl stitches.
Fee for this class is $36 for all 3 weeks and includes the pattern “Classic Socks for the Family” by Yankee Knitter (the ONLY sock pattern you will ever need!) You will also need a set of US2 Double Pointed Needles (dpn) and 350 yards of sock or fingering yarn for a women’s and 450 yards for a men’s pair.
Pillows w/ Julie ~ Dates/times/fee TBA (this class will begin sometime in February)
Learn a couple new techniques while making your choice, or all 3, of the pillows featured in the pattern by Lindsay Ingram called “Snap, Crackle, Pop”.
Dress up your home with pillows made from your choice of worsted weight yarn to match your living space with perfection. Learn a basic cable pattern, a basket weave(ish) stitch, and a funky slip and wrap stitch to make each one unique and practice some new moves. You should be able to cast on, knit and purl pretty comfortably in order to sign up for this class.
You may bring your own materials or purchase them here. We have lots of great choices. You will also need size US8 24″ circular needles, and a tapestry needle. Also, a 16″ pillow insert. I will be doing some research on this, and might be able to just include the pillow in the fee. The pattern will be included in the class fee.
Please contact us via email (email@example.com) or at the store (474-7979) if you are interested in this class, asap. You’re input will help determine the dates/times

At Happyknits, we are feeling it Here’s what we have planned….

At 3 o’clock, just after the store closes, MaryLou and Sarah will be there hosting a Christmas ornament knit-a-long. We have been busy knitting and constructing little ornament kits, equipped with yarn, needles, and a free pattern. The kits are $8.50 and you can choose from 4 different designs, with a few different color options. We have about 20 kits made. It is not necessary you register or sign up ahead of time, but of course always helpful, and you are free of course to come in at any time on Saturday and choose your kit. The knit-a-long will end at 5pm which should give you plenty of time to finish your ornament…..and just think of all the good laughs you will have in the meantime
Enjoy your weekend Everybody….we hope to see you!!
Thanks for reading
- making the world more colorful
Beginning this Saturday afternoon…from about NOON-3pm….participate in a free knitting/crochet group called “The Incogknitos”. Bring scraps of yarn, old acrylic that you wouldn’t be caught dead knitting with now that you’re a “yarn snob”, maybe stuff you’re old Aunt Ezmeralda left you in the will, yard sale finds that you couldn’t turn down because it was only a quarter, or maybe just stuff you don’t know what else to do with. Don’t show up with a sweater project, or a Christmas gift you need to finish, or a charity project! Be spontaneous, and creative, and mindful in the moment. Try out new stitches or color combinations or even try crochet or knit if you do the other. Just come play. We can meet and be wacky, and then figure out where to go from there. I need a posse…..come be my part of something random and silly, and see how it becomes real, and meaningful. If I want anything to become something….it’s this!!! Just show up and don’t worry about commitment….don’t plan on it, just let it happen…sometimes the best things in life just fall in place. And….we can get bombed if you want!! Bring wine!! Bring your best friend….or someone you want to be better friends with….or someone you don’t like at all but feel bad because they need something cool in their life See you then! (Don’t make me beg :/)
GC Special!!!! Reminder, the GC Special that has run in July is being offered in June this year instead. Check out my blog about this, but basically you get a good deal on a Gift Certificate(s)!! Also in June, a new YOTM (Yarn of the Month). This month I have 2 yarns on YOTM: Araucania Lontue and Araucania Ruca (solid and multy).
YOTM - Lontue
YOTM - Ruca Multy
~Araucania Lontue is a light fingering, 3 ply, 50%cotton, 50% linen. It comes in a 50 gram hank with 249 yards. It gives 5 sts/in on US sz 6. ~Araucania Ruca (solid and multy) is a DK weight, 8 ply, 100% plant fiber from sugar cane. It comes in a 100 gram hank with 263 yards. It gives 5.5 sts/in on US sz 4-6.
Both yarns are unique and I have seen some beautiful knits with them. Nice summer yarns!
Well, Spring is almost over and the Summer Solstice is upon us. The first day of Summer this 2013 is June 21st, a Friday. Wow…I am not sure what to think about that. I am hoping for a nice relaxing Summer, busy with fun Summerish activities, but I am thinking about how quickly the time passes….*sigh*. Live each day to the fullest, I guess. Anyway…the Summer Solstice marks the day when Summer Hours at Happyknits take effect. Starting June25th, I will be back on Tuesdays!! So the Summer hours are the same as the Spring, add Tuesday 9:30am-5:30pm.
WWKIP Day/WEEK, begins this Saturday, June 8th. Here’s the link: WWKIP stands for World Wide Knit in Public Day/Week. I will be knitting in Public here at Happyknits on Saturday, and if the weather is nice, I may go right outside where the whole world can see me!!!! Total rebel. Join me or find a place and someone special to hang around in public with and click some needles! Take pictures….send ‘em to me or post ‘em on my Facebook page if you do that sort of thing.
Coincidentally, this Saturday is also IYB Day!! lYB stands for International Yarn Bombing Day!! Do it….go totally bonkers….get all knitty and stuff If you’d like to come knitting with me, we could work on some funky bombs and graffiti the crap out of the Farmer’s Market or the Grist Mill. Don’t tell anyone though….it’s all incog-knit-o you know.
Stop in, say hi, knit a bit. Peace
Crochet Granny Squares

Super Easy blanket
blankie of many colors
These are a few of the blankets in my library on Ravelry. I have been looking at blankets because I love the two we have at home that my Mom knitted for my girls for their birthdays a couple years ago. I also love to have a big project going so that in between projects, I have something to work on a little at a time, then one day finishing it as though I just started it
I am thinking it would be even more fun to get a group of people together for a blanket Knit-a-long (KAL). That would it would not seem so hard to decide which one I want to knit because I could have the vicarious knitting experience through others
I have been pondering when to hold this, because scheduling is so difficult. I know not all times will work for everyone but what I am imaging is Tuesdays and Thursday 1:30-3:30(ish). I would say we could go 4 weeks at a time and see what progress is made.
This is a free group but I would have to put a limit on the number because it is within store hours, so I would have to have people sign up ahead of time. I can take 5 on Tuesday, and 5 on Thursday. If one or the other doesn’t fill up and you want to come both days that would be great, but I would like to offer this to as many as are interested. This is not a class and would not be run by an instructor, but friendly advice is always available.
There are a number of patterns that are either free or available for purchase at the store and it may be possible to special order certain yarns if interested.
I would like to start this as soon as possible while still having enough time to get the word out, so let’s aim for TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH, and THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7th to begin.
Call to reserve a spot, 474-7979, or email, firstname.lastname@example.org, or stop in Tuesday-Friday (see fall/winter business hours) and sign up!! Thanks
