Would you like to help with the Happyknits Benefit for Amanda and Luke White?
You may know Amanda White. She works at Computer Improvements in Skowhegan and lives with her husband, Luke, in Cornville. Amanda just had her first child, a girl. Taylor was born the second week of April at a Portland hospital and weighed 7 pounds, even though her birth was induced a month early.
The early birth was necessary because Amanda will undergo a double mastectomy in Portland in May. Amanda’s birth family is one of those with a strong genetic tendency to have breast cancer, each generation at an earlier age. Amanda’s grandmother and mother both died of cancer.
You may know her grandfather, Lee Turcotte. Lee is 85. For years he has been collecting returnable bottles and cans, donating the deposit money to cancer research — over $12,000 to date!
Happyknits is having a benefit to help Amanda and Luke deal with medical costs. Here are the ways you can take part:
1. Knit baby clothes for Taylor and knit gifts for Amanda and Taylor. We will pack up your handknit items in a knit diaper bag on Riverfest weekend and present them to the family. What could be more caring than a hand knit item! Register what you want to knit and the size at Happyknits. Visit the shop and see what others are making. Happyknits Spring/Summer store hours are Tues 9:30-5:30pm, Wednesday 11:30-7:30pm, Friday 9:30-5:30pm, and Saturday 9:30-3:30pm.
2. Donate a second knit item to the auction we will have on Riverfest weekend. Your donated item will be displayed at Happyknits, and interested shoppers can purchase and enter a ticket into the corresponding bag. The items and auction will remain at Happyknits the entire week of Riverfest, and winners will be drawn at the conclusion of the week. More detailed information will be posted as the time grows nearer as to our items for auction and more about the reception.
3. Come to our auction and reception during the kick-off of Riverfest, July 27th-August 5th.
4. Put some cash in the cannister on the Happyknits counter.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and your knitting talent!

I would love to participate, however, my knitting isn’t that good. Could I sew or quilt something and still participate? Maybe I could embroider some burp pads? Please let me know.

Robin, your knitting is fantastic! If you prefer to sew, that would be very cool as well. I love the idea of embroidered burp cloths. Thank you!
